Ancestor money or Joss paper money, also known as ghost or spirit money, are sheets of paper or paper-crafts made into burnt offerings common in Chinese ancestral worship (such as the veneration of the deceased family members and relatives on holidays and special occasions).
Today, burning spirit or Joss money for ancestors is a way to show respect, fulfill duties, and guarantee good luck to the spirit in the afterlife. The family believes that the money floats up to heaven for the spirit to use in that realm.
Burning ancestor money also aids the deceased into a better next life. Family members burn large amounts of money, so the deceased can use it to pay down their debt of bad deeds from their lifetime. Paying off the karmic debts leads to a more favorable incarnation.
A big yellow paper is used for sending note, please write down the name of ancestor or deceased loved ones and your name on the appropriate positions (please refer to the photo).
Ritual for burning ancestor money:
We recommend you to light a candle and say name of family member(s) or deceased lover and your prayer(s) or words spoken. Telling them to receive the money and give thanks! After candle and ancestor money completely burnt, you may leave.
